Coca Cola Unveils “A Billion Reasons to Believe in Africa” Brand Campaign

The Coca-Cola System has announced the launch of its continental campaign, tagged, "A Billion Reasons to Believe in Africa."

Unveiling the new initiative recently in Lagos, according to a statement by the company on Wednesday, the Brand Manager, Colas, for Coca-Cola Nigeria Limited, Mr. Femi Ashipa, said the purpose of the new campaign was to celebrate Africa and Africans.

He described the campaign as a quest to collect the positive and inspirational stories that Africa has to tell the world about itself.

According to him, there are over a billion people that live in Africa; hence, there must be a billion different reasons to believe in Africa, which the company is providing an avenue for through this campaign.

He said, "It is an avenue for the people of Africa to tell their unique stories of optimism and happiness. The world may choose to see Africa as dark, hopeless and a home to war, famine, corruption, poverty and disease, but we at Coca-Cola choose to see this beautiful continent through a fresh and colourful lense."

"

Glass of CokeCoca-Cola has operated on this continent for several decades with footprints that extend to every country. We know, understand, live and breathe Africa; hence we can influence positive attitudes amongst Africans by providing a beacon of optimism. Although negative news sells, we are increasingly witnessing a positive shift in every facet of the continent and have chosen to celebrate those things instead."

Noting the vast improvement that Africa has made in the last decade in the areas of sports, music, business, arts, technology, politics and fashion, Ashipa said The Coca-Cola Company was looking forward to promoting unique individuals, creations and innovations that had excelled in their fields.

Hennessy Artistry , the Art of BRANDING!!!

With the release of 'Bartender' audio and video by NaetoC and M.I, we can comfortably say the the Hennessey Brand has fully endeared itself to the hearts of the youthful Nigerian population.

Coming off the back of a very successful 2011 which saw the brand engage the services of the talented trio of Eldee , BankyW and Tiwa Savage with the release of 'Toast to the Good life'. The public has started to appreciate a quality brand leveraging on the ever developing and evolving Nigerian music industry.

The Hennessey Artistry project started off with road shows in bars with various talents exhibiting their skills, and eventually a winner is picked with such notable names as Jesse Jags and Ice Prince being involved in the project.

It further evolved to the state of actual single release with a huge gamble as Kas produced their very first 'Hennessey Artistry' song with Bez, Shina Peters, Nneka M.I and Ice Prince. This release was followed up with a video like with the subsequent songs.

As is common for artists in Nigeria to make reference to alcoholic beverages, the fact that quality music is being produced with the sole aim of promoting one of such beverages year in and year out is not just brilliant but a master stroke in the art of branding.

Here is the video directed by the talented Clarence Peters, with M.I and Naeto C doing their thing.

In the next few months and years,  we wait in huge expectation as to what the market reaction would be as regards the spirit / alcoholic beverage industry. At the rate Hennessey is going, it would take a lot to bring them down or even match them. Kudos to the team that put this together.

Event: The Future Awards

Seven days to The Future Awards 2012, holding in Port Harcourt, Rivers State this weekend, 25 and 26 August, the Central Working Committee (CWC) has unveiled the shortlist of 5 people per category for the Awards.

“It’s, as usual, been an intense eight weeks,” says Chude Jideonwo, who is Executive Director of The Future Project. “After the nominations, there was the process of administering nomination forms, where we also interviewed the nominees, secured references, conducted independent research, and held random inspections of books, finances, and so on. We also got evidence of all the nominees’ ages and had a two-week period for any complaints from the public. Simultaneous with voting, the Board of Judges - 30 young media influencers from across the country – sat for a full day and produced the shortlist, which goes to the Independent Audit Committee. The names will then return to the Board of Judges who will choose the final winners.”

Members of the Independent Audit Committee include TV host Mo Abudu, external relations director of the Nigeria LNG, SieneAlwell-Brown, politician Jimi Agbaje, Stanbic IBTC director YemiOsindero, LEAP Africa founder NdidiNwuneliamongst others.

Forbes describes Linda Ikeji as ‘Beauty, Brains and the Business of Blogging’

In celebration of Women’s Day in South Africa this month, Forbes Africa has fielded in its August edition of its monthly magazine Africa’s most prominent women of 2012.
Donning the cover on the August issue is one of Africa’s richest women Wendy Appelbaum as she talks about ‘why women in the boardroom should be making noise’.
Although the list is yet to be released online by Forbes, people are already excited and eager to know who made it.
It has been a long struggle for women in business, which is far from over. History even records the first woman to work in an office in Johannesburg. It was in 1894, screens were put up around her because it was not appropriate for her to be seen – more on this in the cover story of the August issue’, says Managing Editor for Forbes Africa, Chris Bishop.
Popular Nigerian blogger Linda Ikeji is also featured in the magazine. Forbes describes Ikeji, a former model and magazine publisher,as ‘Nigeria’s highest paid blogger’ in the article ‘Beauty, Brains and the Business of Blogging’.
This edition also includes the Forbes list of Africa’s most prominent women as well as interviews and inspirational stories of some of the continent’s most powerful woman to date‘, he concludes.

ARE REALITY TV SHOWS BECOMING THE NEW ‘REALITY’?

With the constant roll and launch of new reality shows every other day, one begins to wonder if all the brands can think of now is Reality TV. Agreed that Reality TV shows have been positioned as marketing tools to reaching a target audience which in most cases aren’t targeted, but have brands been able to utilize this platform to their benefits? And how well these shows have impacted positively on the sponsoring brands is a subject matter for another day.
Don’t you just love Nigerians? A people of diverse cultures who applaud anything and about everything thrown at them! When this fad called Reality TV started about 8years ago, it was a new concept and it kept every one on the edge of their seats while staying glued to the TV set for the duration of the show. After the success of Gulder Ultimate Search in 2004, all hell figuratively broke loose. Brands began dishing out shows on all kinds of platforms and in various works of life. From the original creative concepts by some brands, to those simply looking out to make a profit and to the not so original versions simply duplicating ideas.
Working closely behind the scenes on some reality shows has indeed been an eye-opener for me.  In putting together what amounts to an ‘edifice’, large chunks of money are funneled the way of advertising and sponsorships leading to huge wage bills. And it leaves one wondering what could be the driving forces for these brands. Is it to join the moving band wagon or to sell the message of the brand? Some brands’ claim to the latter only further serves to beg the question
At the last count, well over 30 reality shows have been competing for viewer attention, from Nigerian Breweries Star Quest, Gulder Ultimate Search, Amstel Malta Box Office, Maltina Dance All, Peak Talent Show, Eco Bank’s Entrepreneur, UBA’s Dragon Den, Malta Guiness Street Dance, MTN’s Project Fame, Etisalat’s Nigerian Idols, Glo’s Naija sings, D’banj’s Koko Mansion, Skye Bank’s Celebrity Takes 2, Oceanic Bank’s Football with Fash, Nokia First Chance, MTN’s Soccer Academy to others like Big Brother Nigeria, The Debators, The Apprentice, Kid’s Alone, The 12 Ambassadors, Dessert Warriors and most recently Green Democrat, Mingle Weekly and Stylogenic but a few to mention. Wow! Typing this bit just knocks air out of my lungs and the list continues. Another point to note is that one common focus of most reality shows is to turn ordinary people into celebrities; sadly, few brands sustain the association. These contestants’ hopes are raised far beyond the imaginable whilst few enjoy a long-term commitment.
In the marketing world today, the challenge to search for a perfect way of attracting the attention of consumers is a top priority. There is intense pressure to ensure delivery of value to the consumer. With the explosion of new technologies and increased consumer control of the communication process, reality shows have become a powerful innovation that has elevated the positive engagement of consumers to another height. Brands are continually reminded of the fact that they have to engage consumers on a different level as the traditional means have become less than efficient. Globalization at a pace that couldn’t have been more frenetic, has led to a fine tuning of marketing communication solutions  – with the overarching  objective being to grab the consumer’s attention and keeping  same a loyal advocate of the brand.
There is no arguing that Reality Shows are a good innovation and a level for brands to connect with consumers but how well do brands key into this goldmine and not turn it into a bore and nightmare like every other beautiful idea? This brings us back to the opening question: How brands havebeen able to utilize this platform to their benefit? More often than not, people enjoy the show and forget the brand behind the show. Therefore, while the reality show fad runs its course, it is important that brand owners and managers think of more creative and effective ways to drive their brands deeper into the mind of their consumers.
The challenge lies with brand experts who must step up research and creativity in this area. With thorough and continuous research, better content and deployment strategies will evolve. This will excite the market and sustain its attention. Consumers are dynamic in nature and it is only when suspense, creativity and entertainment are positively utilised, that reality shows can remain dependable consumer engagement projects that can give any brand the desired advantage. Brands must also be sure of the integrity of facilitators before committing their brands to some of these shows.
Concept creators should also begin to think out of the box, step out of their comfort zones and birth unimagined concepts because as the society gets more sophisticated and adapt fully to the digital age, the reality show appeal is sure to loose a lot of followership, appeal and steam and slowly and eventually become a redundant marketing communication tool for brands who refuse to keep up with the new trends or think outside of what is gradually turning into an over-used box.
It is no news that in the coming years, Reality TV shows will increase in number. Brands looking to swell the existing database should embrace projects that will re-enforce their brand attributes and the level of creativity of strategies designed to engage consumers should increase. After all we deserve some quality entertainment. Don’t we?

Event: Nigeria Radio Awards (NIRA)

Communication has over the years, come to play such an important role in the society that it has come to be regarded as the very plank upon which learning, cultural exchange, trade and many other socio and econo-political relations are hoisted. We have identified radio as our commonest and cheapest means of communication, which can reach and permeate all strata of society, in spite of class, tongue or belief.

With the goal to promote radio, encourage excellence in the medium and ensure that radio remains
the first choice for marketers, we present to you Nigeria Radio Awards (NiRA).

With radio still at the forefront of media sources utilised by many Nigerians to garner information
and to interact with the world, the Nigeria Radio AwardProject seeks to motivate and recognise
radio stations and organisations to constantly raise the bar in terms of their performance and
general service optimization, with a firm focus on keeping their audience engaged and happy,
by instilling in these stations and individuals a sense of healthy competition that would be
geared towards quality enhancement in their service outputs, whether in terms of News,
Education or Entertainment.

We have chosen to carry out this recognition through honouring Nigeria’s outstanding radio
talent, from in-front-of-the-mic presenters to behind-the-scene producers. By doing so,
we hope to inspire people wishing to enter this dynamic industry to adequately prepare
themselves for the arduous task of quality broadcasting.

This first edition, as, indeed, other subsequent editions, of the Nigeria Radio Awards shall
aim at presenting a credible, well-judged, transparent programme that promotes and
recognises excellence in radio, especially, with the objective of ensuring that radio
remains one of Nigeria’s foremost media choices. Everything shall be about rewarding
those individuals and stations who combine talent, hard work and skill to ensure that their
listeners are compelled to pay attention whenever they are on air.

It’s our desire to see radio stations produce a more involved, relevant and valuable content
and the need to understand the consumer and deliver the services. We also feel that
clients and marketers want more measurability and opportunity to connect with people
in a unique space. Therefore, Nigeria Radio Awards(NiRA) seeks to promote the idea
that the radio industry needs to continually reinvent and take itself more seriously.
